Show Notes

In this episode, we interview Katie Beecher, a licensed counselor and medical intuitive, who shares her personal journey with Lyme disease and its impact on her life. Katie discusses growing up in Lyme, Connecticut, and her lifelong symptoms that were eventually diagnosed in her mid-forties through non-traditional testing. She explains how her own experience with Lyme led her to specialize in helping others with the disease, emphasizing the importance of intuition, self-awareness, and holistic healing practices. Katie touches on the significance of understanding one's symptoms, emotional well-being, and the integration of body, mind, and spirit in the healing process. She also introduces her book, "Heal From Within", which guides readers on connecting with their intuition and addressing the root causes of their health issues.

[00:01:40] Speaker D: Well, I have the absolute pleasure of having Katie Beecher with me today. Thank you so much for spending some time and chatting with me. [00:01:47] Speaker E: Oh, thanks for inviting me. [00:01:49] Speaker D: Well, so you grew up in Lyme, Connecticut and two towns over, but yeah, pretty darn close. And then obviously, I mean, I don't know, why would anyone that knows about lime? I mean, obviously you didn't know growing up. I mean, why would you want to live there? I mean, it just seems like, yeah, if you're there, you're going to get lime. [00:02:14] Speaker E: It's. It's a beautiful part of the country. It's right on the, you know, Connecticut shoreline and right on the beach and, you know, all that good stuff and, you know, the woods are beautiful and. But I think what we've learned is it's obviously not. Not exclusive to the Northeast and it's, you know, all over the world, even though some countries have denied that it existed there. But, yeah, it's a beautiful place to live and raise kids. And we actually raised our kids even closer to Lyme than where I grew up £1 over. So. And funny story, my, my daughter played for lacrosse team and their name was the Ticks. [00:02:53] Speaker D: Oh, the Ticks. Yeah. They're very infectious, right? I love it, love it. So talk to me a little bit about your own journey and I know that you have then transitioned into. And it's probably, you know, how God, universe, how it works, you know, you kind of guide you to what you need yourself, you know, to help others with. [00:03:20] Speaker E: Definitely. So we. I had a lot of symptoms of Lyme, but of, you know, I didn't know, I'm 60. So it was kind of right around the time when, when I think her name was Polly, was discovering, you know, what her, what her kids were going through and. But I had tons of Lyme symptoms from the time I was a kid and I had, you know, stomach stuff and aches and pains and depression and all kinds of things. Now, a caveat, I also have Ehlers Danlos which can cause similar symptoms. However, I had Bell's palsy. I had know looking back on all of the things that were indicative of Lyme. And we had great health care. My mom was a nurse. We got our care at Yale. You know, I mean, there's no reason that someone should not have said, hey, maybe this is a possibility. But it took until my mid-40s to actually get diagnosed and it was through non traditional testing because the regular tests are not wonderful and came back negative. But you know, looking back on all that and working with my naturopath, we were able to put together this kind of timeline of things and she's like, you've had it probably your whole life. My dad was a hunter. He brought home deer. They were hanging in our garage. You know, the dogs had ticks all the time. I mean, it's not rocket science, you know. And I was fortunate in that even though I definitely had symptoms, we figured out I was probably treating a lot of them symptomatically and through spiritual, emotional things and all that. So I never was as debilitated as a lot of the people that we see today. [00:05:21] Speaker D: And I think that's kind of the challenge for some people because you have the ones that are really sick and then you try to figure it out and your back is against the wall. But then you have that kind of middle of the spectrum group that just dealing with symptoms, it's weird. It comes and goes. And sometimes I think those people don't recognize that they're not pushed symptom wise to try to figure out why as much they just kind of go into that symptom management. [00:05:53] Speaker E: It's true. And especially when it includes mental health stuff. So I still, it blew me away when I got healed, you know, from the lyme and every CO infection, the depression I had had since I was 12 went away. So that was like, wow. And you know, there's. As we know, every single case is different. It looks different on everybody. So that's something that I pass on to people, being a licensed counselor and medical intuitive. Because it's not just about medication or neurochemicals. There's so many underlying factors. [00:06:33] Speaker D: Yeah, exactly. So what. So you dealt a little bit with depression and what were some of the kind of other symptoms that were coming and going that weren't extreme, but they were there. [00:06:43] Speaker E: There were always, you know, aches and pains and gut stuff. Thyroid little. I'm trying to remember back. It's all I wrote about it. My God. There's like. It was. But it was just kind of not ever feeling good, fatigue, not sleeping well, you know, brain fog, ADHD symptoms. So many things that, you know, we'd go to the doctor and it would be like, not really sure what this is about, you know, but just mind blowing that no one ever, ever brought up the possibility of Lyme. [00:07:24] Speaker D: I mean, like I said in the beginning, it's just fascinating to me that that should be the first place you look. You know, if you're in lime Connecticut. [00:07:32] Speaker E: You know, I know. And Yale Hospital, you know, like. Yeah. Who unfortunately still just basically treat with antibiotics. I mean, and I get my carrot mayo. Now their line of treatment is antibiotics and I'm just like, oh. [00:07:50] Speaker D: So yeah, yeah, it's still just short bursts, you know, it's not, not that kind of where you, you rotate and you combine and you, you know, it, it's, it's, it's not that. So how. Yeah, you mentioned that was not the conventional way that you found out that you had Lyme. How did you find out? I mean, what were some of the ways that you figured out that you had Lyme? [00:08:16] Speaker E: Yeah, so I mean, it's a little woo woo stuff kind of sort of. But that's okay. [00:08:21] Speaker D: I mean, reality is fascinating and we still try to figure it out. [00:08:25] Speaker E: It is. So I worked with a practitioner who had been working with Lyme since before Lyme was a thing. And they did use blood tests and stuff, but their primary way of testing was to. You came in the office or they use saliva still. They work long distance and stuff. And they had an electronic frequency machine called the Vega which is used a lot in Europe and you hold on to it and then you, you know, get probed and stuff and different things will come up as positive. So with me it was the traditional Lyme bacteria and then every CO infection. I also had molds at the time, some viral activity, high toxicity levels because Lyme makes it hard to detox. And so what I said to them was I've known you guys since I was 17. Everything I've ever had, you guys have found. But I'm also a clinician. So I said I want also some blood tests to also verify this because I want to be able to really recommend you to my clients and blah blah, blah. So they did some herbals and things to kind of kick up the levels of this Lyme that had been my in my body for 40 something years. And after that my symptoms didn't get worse. It just kind of picked it up, whatever that means. And they did just quest testing, basic, not anything fancy. And every single thing that their weird testing pulled up was verified by these blood tests. So it was a confirmation. There's a lot of ways to address this stuff. And then another great thing about the way that they worked is it was individualized. So they used the machine and either your saliva or your body to match you with the exact treatment options your body specifically needed. So there wasn't guessing, there wasn't one size fits all protocols. I was a very sensitive person, still am. So I'm very sensitive to any anything like herbals aren't without side effects, you know. So they were able to design a program for me that worked. And then I also another woo woo thing in their office. They have a pretty high powered rife machine. Rife for people listening. And again, my husband would go in with me and be like, what in God's name are you doing? This is like insane. But I really feel like it was an important part of the treatment. I got better in nine months, which is pretty, pretty crazy. And I'm very lucky. And the cool thing about the rife too is that it was able to measure the levels of the Lyme and the viruses and stuff so you could see the levels going down as you were getting your treatment. And because it was so powerful, I only needed to go every six, like four to six weeks. I really tried not to be a professional patient and get caught up in going to doctor's appointments anymore, you know, all the time. I did not want to identify myself with a disease, so I consciously stopped using the word Lyme as much as I could. I refused to put my in front of my symptoms. I did not want to own them. They were real. I took care of it. But I knew that I had to maintain an identity separate from having an illness and to live my life and do all the things that I could do to the best of my ability to. And then also we can talk more about this. But I learned how to connect to my intuition and connect to my body and talk to my symptom as friends so that they'd be part of my healing team instead of fearing them or feeling like they Were taking over and in control. [00:14:54] Speaker D: These are big issues when a person is going through, I mean, any kind of disease. But yeah, obviously Lyme. It's a great example here. You feel that almost like your body's betraying you, that there's something that is taken over and you're losing control. And that can be very scary. So then you go into, like, you're saying that fear mode. Am I ever going to get better? Am I going to be able to enjoy my grandchildren or do this or that again, ever? And that can be really scary to kind of lose functions that you. I mean, that. That you treasured. And so not to hold on to that becomes really, you know, really important because that will interfere with your healing process. That fear will suppress immune system, will trigger more inflammation, and will also increase stress hormones. And, you know, you won't detoxify as fast. And I mean, the list just goes on and on when you're in a. [00:16:00] Speaker E: State of fear, it really does. I mean, those are all such good points. And when I work with people, I bring this up with all of the different conditions and things that you work with, but that health anxiety can really take over and become a powerful secondary condition to whatever else you're dealing with. And then that, you know, there's PTSD involved in that. And then people who tell me, I have been to so many doctors or practitioners or whatever, and I get my hopes up because I think it's going to help, and then it doesn't. And then I don't want to go anymore. And then there's all this gaslighting about being told that you don't have it or not even being believed. And it's. I think that's gotten better. And you can, you know, tell me about that, but it's still really tough. And then labels like fibromyalgia, which is not my. My favorite label, you know, and it really doesn't mean anything because you need to look for the root causes, which are often things like Lyme. And people just get so discouraged and depressed and. And I get it. [00:17:14] Speaker D: Yeah. That's the thing in the medical profession. You cannot throw a label onto something that essentially the label in itself just is a fancy word for the symptoms a person is dealing with, like arthritis, inflammation of the joints, or fibromyalgia. You get your fibers and your muscles and algae pain. So, duh, I know I'm in pain. I don't need to be diagnosed with that kind of a label. Why am I in pain? That is the issue. And how do I get rid of whatever it is that's causing the pain. Yeah, and exactly. So. So it was interesting to me that you. You started to specialize in Lyme prior to having Lyme. Almost Right, I did. [00:18:04] Speaker E: I really feel like I'm a guinea pig for my clients. And it was. It was really funny how I started to have all sorts of. Of lime. You know, patients come to me. And then shortly after, I discovered that I myself had it, and I'm like, okay, fine, you know, my. My thing, whatever. At least I know what's been causing a lot of this stuff my whole life. And so, yeah, it's kind of amusing, but it really helps me to work with people better. And a kind of strange story, as I said. I learned how to talk to my symptoms and my body and my intuition and to treat them as friends, which sounds weird, but our symptoms tell us stories. They give us information, they get our attention. And so many of the people I work with, they do so much for others or they don't rest or they give so much to their job. And there's not self care. They don't know how to express their feelings. You know, they're shut up and they just don't feel like they have a right to exist sometimes. And they get sick, something like Lyme, and all of a sudden they're forced into self care and they are forced to listen to their body and respond and be an advocate for themselves and these things that wouldn't have happened otherwise. And they are finally getting attention from people who didn't pay attention to them before. And I'm not saying they got it to get attention. That's the opposite of what I'm saying. But I found that there's so many purposes in illness and for me. So I wrote to Lyme and I said, okay, what's going on? Like, why now? Why did I find this out? Whatever. And the answer I got when it wrote back was, it's time to write your book that you have been told you needed to write since you were 16, when you were going through your eating disorder recovery, and it's time to write that proposal. And I was like, that's terrifying. That's more terrifying than hearing I have Lyme because I don't know what to do, how to start, whatever. And it was. I said, okay, fine, I want to get better. I'm going to do this. And obviously, you know, have my book and stuff, but I just want to let people know, like, if you are wanting to do something or needing to get out of A bad relationship or needing to switch jobs or, you know, needing to get more self care or whatever it is that you're needing to do that your intuition has been telling you about, that you've been pushing down an illness or an accident or something can be a really important impetus to doing that thing. [00:21:10] Speaker D: Yeah. It's almost like because the body only has so many ways to communicate and also your mind and your spirit, so to say, and frequently things like pain, depression, anxiety. Yeah. And like you're saying these are, it's not that they're symptoms to fight, you know, these are symptoms to learn from. Yeah. And because the body is trying to communicate, saying that there's something wrong and we need to alter the course and we need to figure this out. And if we don't listen to that and just do symptom management, then it's like a toddler that you, you know, you just close the door, you know, screaming and just close the door and after a while just kind of gives up and won't communicate anymore. So I'm really interested in your book. I mean, so what, what inspired, I mean, you felt that urge that now, you know, it was ready. But what did you want to communicate through your book? Tell me. [00:22:11] Speaker E: When I was 16, I had a very severe eating disorder. I was bulimic and suicidal and probably in part due to those Lyme symptoms too. Right. So I decided that either I was going to get better or I didn't want to live anymore. And I really think it was divine intervention because I came from home, from school one day and called our pediatrician. I didn't tell my parents, didn't tell anybody. I didn't feel like I had support and said, hey, I'm making myself sick and I need to get help. And this was 1983, so no one was really talking about eating disorders. But so he said, you know, I'm sure you'll be fine, it's okay. And I just know I'm not fine. And he referred me to a Jungian, Carl Jung. Jungian psychology therapist. Thank you, God. And I was really determined to get better and I had to hit my bottom in order to be willing to ask for help. So it was a gift. It was the best thing that could have happened to me. And so we work together on getting to know myself and being authentic and setting boundaries and separating from my dysfunctional family and doing things like learning to write to my intuition and connect to it. And so I knew, I kept hearing from my intuitive guides that you need to use this experience to help others and that you would be writing a book and you'll be, you know, talking to lots of people and doing things and making a difference with this difficult thing that you've gone through. So I became a licensed counselor and always worked really intuitively. But my book is. It's a few things. It's my own story about recovering from an eating disorder. There's a lot in there about my recovery from Lyme and, and other people's examples of how they recovered from Lyme also. And just different things, you know, like that. But it's sort of a way of getting to know yourself, how to connect your intuition, how to listen to your body, how to recognize what your symptoms are telling you and how they're connected and all of the different physical, emotional and spiritual things that you can do to treat your individual stuff from a holistic point of view. [00:24:47] Speaker D: I love that. And so tell me, you're saying getting to know yourself, I mean, how, how did that process look like? Because that is usually, yeah, it sounds great, but how, how, how does one do it? How do you get to know yourself? [00:25:04] Speaker E: That's such a great question. Because I work with people of all ages and you know, even people in their 70s, and they're like, I don't think I know who I am. I don't even know what I want. I don't even know what's important. And I. It's often because they've put other people first or when they were younger, their identity came from people pleasing or, you know, pushing their own feelings down and who they are. So it's. And I always say you can't have self love until you have self acceptance. So for me it was learning to be present, get to know what's important to me, what do I like, what don't I like? What are characteristics about me that I again, are positive and not so positive and just starting to think about. When you go through life, like, does this align with me? Does it align with my values? Who am I honestly? Can I honestly look at myself and say, yeah, that's an issue? Or even more importantly, sometimes these are my strengths. These are the things I like about myself. It's okay to say that it's important. So, so really getting to know yourself as a whole. And one exercise that I have people do, and it's super easy, is start a running list like on your phone, just of things about you. So not go to bed, just, you know, I have blue eyes or I have brown hair, or I hate broccoli, or I really like this movie or. And the more that you develop that list, the more that you start to see a picture of yourself and patterns and start to notice I'm doing this thing and it really doesn't fit with me, I don't belong here, or this is not, I'm not expressing how I feel or any of those things. And you just start to kind of get a picture of yourself that you can change. You know, it's not set in stone, but people are so quick to be negative and find things that they don't like about themselves and put themselves down. And I think that lack of self love and acceptance really influences our health. [00:27:39] Speaker D: So essentially we can go through the list. You're, you've got to be, you're just, you know, this is about me, good or bad. I'm not judging it. I'm not feeling bad about this aspect of myself. It's just who I am. And I'm just getting to know myself. So how, because you work with, you know, all these Lyme patients, I'm really curious as an individual go through their healing journey, you know, what impact does getting to know yourself have on, on a person's, you know, how they experience their, their symptoms? [00:28:17] Speaker E: It is absolutely huge. So, you know, people come to me and the way that I do my readings is pretty unique. With just a name and someone's age, I create a four page report. It's really extensive about everything that has gone on in their life and it's going on now. And it might be trauma, childhood, different characteristics, physical stuff, emotional stuff, career, anything you can imagine. And then I create an intuitive soul painting out of watercolor that's kind of symbolic representation of the person's energy and characteristics. It's a different way of getting information, which is kind of fun. So that all gets sent before I talk to them, before I meet with them. So I can't BS It's. And when we go through the report and also people have questions and stuff, we look at not only what's going on physically, but hey, you know, my guides brought up that your relationship doesn't feel very happy. How are you feeling about that? Or are you experiencing grief? Because I picked up some of that and loss and how are you liking your job and different things, you know, how are you at expressing yourself? And so for everybody's different and so for one person it might be, you know, I've been with my partner for 10 years and I'm not getting what I need, I'm really unhappy, or I'm being treated Badly, but I'm afraid to leave. And it could be finances, it could be just not having been alone anymore. It could be there's so many reasons why we don't make the changes we need to make. But by. And. And a lot of people do not identify the role that their life choices and emotional stuff influences their physical illness. So in this, in, you know, some cases I can think of, there's a lot of examples in my book. But when someone gets sick or they, you know, with Lyme or has all these symptoms, they physically and emotionally have to change. Maybe they can't do so much anymore. Maybe they can't take care of anybody, of people. The same way they can't make people's dinners, you know, they can't show for them all over the place. They can't. So their life changes. And they also realize that maybe, you know, they've been holding in this anger or resentment or haven't been saying, I need this, or have been afraid to ask for help because they haven't gotten it before or have been control freaks who, you know, live in fear. So by working on all of these things and helping people to make gradual changes that doesn't happen overnight, it's amazing. The healing that I see and the transformation. And people who maybe they live their lives in fear, but because they don't have a choice, have had to find courage, you know, and it also gets into, you know what? Maybe eating differently. I'm worth it now. Maybe I can stop smoking or smoke less because I'm important. Maybe I can start this business that I've been wanting to start. So it's a very, very cool process to watch. [00:32:07] Speaker D: I love that. And as people go through this, you mentioned, all of a sudden they don't. [00:32:14] Speaker B: Own their life story anymore. [00:32:17] Speaker D: The story becomes a different empowerment of knowing themselves. And obviously, when you're in that place spiritually and emotionally, then physically, you're then able to control inflammation and control your immune system. Much more effective in controlling things. [00:32:35] Speaker E: Yeah, the less cortisol. Just that, you know, I mean, so many things stem from that. And yeah, it's. It really is. We are really multifaceted, you know, it really is all connected. [00:32:50] Speaker D: So you're saying things like, you know, rife, you know, this. Woo, woo. And Vega, how about reading? You know, doing a medical reading? I mean, what. How do you explain that? [00:33:03] Speaker E: Yes, I wish I could. So, yeah, people get the reports and they're like, how do you know all this? This is insane. I feel like I've known you forever. Like where did you. You know, because it's not stuff that you could look up on Google or that people put on social media. It's deep stuff, and it's a long report, and it's, you know, and sometimes things people have never told anybody, like deep, deep trauma that they've been sitting with forever. I. I don't know how I do it. I've always worked, even as a therapist. I always let my intuition come in and listen to what it had to say for the person I was working with. I am also a medium. So sometimes, you know, people's passed over, loved ones or pets will come through and give them messages. And, you know, I guess the way that I make sense of it is quantum physics. We're, we're all connected and there's not really boundaries and there's. There's all these things. And I'd like to think of intuition as something very natural, including medical intuition. So you have symptoms, your child has symptoms. You automatically start saying to yourself, what is this about? What do I need to do? Did I eat something that was strange? Did I just start taking a medication or an herb? And now I'm having these effects. Is there a relationship? You know, do I need to go lay down or do I need to go to a hospital? Or you automatically start doing that kind of work because your body wants to heal. So for me, medical intuition is something that we do from, you know, the time we're born. If you're a child that has a pain, have a pain, and you can't speak, you cry, and that's your way of getting help. So it's, you know, I can do it to the nth degree, and it's definitely weird. But I also like to think of it as natural and something that everybody can access. And that was part of writing my book too, is I wanted to teach people how to do that. [00:35:24] Speaker D: I love that. And the thing is that, like I said, it's so much more to reality than what we know. And also they've seen experiments where you have an individual's energetic field and you see changes in that field before the thought is created, which means that your cerebral thinking, conscious thinking is, is essentially an after effect. So if you can then tap into more of that raw, connected intelligence that we're all swimming in, then we then have. We escalate our ability to understand ourselves and also understand everything around us. And you have the theory with the holographic universe where every little piece of, of every component has the knowledge about the whole. And so that means that each individual, if we tap into that, we have knowledge about the whole. We have knowledge about everything that we can connect. So I feel that if it is a gift and also understanding that we have that ability, then obviously, with any ability, if we practice it, it gets better. [00:36:41] Speaker E: Exactly. And I also want to say, and it's really important to me, I do not diagnose. That is illegal. It's unethical. There are people who do some of this work who do or who tell people they've been sexually abused or whatever. And that is just not okay. So if that is happening to you, you may want to switch gears. And, you know, I refer to, like, the people who help me or other people that I've met for official diagnoses, for treatment for. I help a lot, but I am not a substitute for a medical professional. And that's really important to know. [00:37:21] Speaker D: Yeah. And that when you go through a health journey, it's about creating a team, and it's not leaning just on one individual, but having the team around you that can support you in all these different areas and. Yeah. Being it. So, yeah, I think that's important. So how. How do people find out about you? What is the name of your book? Where can they find your book? [00:37:46] Speaker E: So my. I usually have my book behind me and I couldn't find it, but. So it's called Heal from Within and In A Guide to Intuitive Wellness. And it's available everywhere, bookstores, Amazon, wherever. My website is the easiest. It's just. Katie beecher.com There's a link to my. Purchase my book on my website as well. And you can make appointments through my website. My email's on there if you have questions, anything like that. But the website is probably the easiest. And I'm on Instagram and all those places, too. [00:38:21] Speaker D: I love that. I love that. Well, Katie, thank you so much for. For what you're doing. And. Yeah, and that. That's the thing. It's such a frustrating journey for so many people and to have somebody to be able to guide them through that journey and be able to connect with the power that I believe each individual has and that intuition. And then obviously that will turn on the power of all these other aspects of yourself when you just start to learn to listen to that. And so thank you so much, Katie, for spending this time with me. [00:38:58] Speaker E: Oh, thank you so much. I really enjoyed our conversation. And thank you for everything you do. [00:39:03] Speaker D: Thank you.
